Reflection Post

I think my favorite project this semester was the Premiere project we finished with. For me it was a really fun activity that allowed me to make a sort of after movie of all of my EDM experiences. I really liked being able to look back on all of the events that I went to and for me it was a really fun and personal project. I think I was really able to portray the feeling of EDM festivals and felt the most proud of this project. When I started I had little to no knowledge of how to use Premiere. After some of the tutorials and a few additional how to videos I felt a lot more comfortable with the program. I have never really done much with video editing and I think I have come really far from where I first started. I really enjoyed being able to create a video on a topic that I was passionate about and the learning process along the way.

I feel like everything that I learned in this course will really help me with my  future plans. I hope to one day join the Graphic Design field and I know that Adobe will be a major part of that job. I feel like each of these projects really helped me grow and transform my skills. The first project really helped me with design lay out. I had a lot of technical skills with Photoshop before this project but I think it really made me think more about how things should be laid out and how to create a poster for a certain type of audience. The second project was definitely a close second as a favorite. I never used to like Illustrator as a program but after this semester, I have come to love it. I also had a little bit of technical experience with this program before entering Com 210 but the class gave me a good review on the characteristics of a good logo. This part I really enjoyed because it relied heavily on design and graphic design which I hope to pursue later in life.

The last two projects I really enjoyed and think they will help with my future but maybe not to the same extent as the other two. I liked the audio project and learned a lot about Audition. I originally knew nothing about that program and had a lot of fun learning how to use it. Finally, as I had stated above, the premiere project helped me learn a lot about video editing. I knew nothing about the program and never really put much thought into different shooting angles and the 10 second rule. Overall I think I gained a lot of technical skills that will aid me in my career.

I don’t think there were any skills that I wish I could have learned. I know on the class website there are a lot of links to tutorials and other sites that aid in the students learning. I really think this class is based on your own learning. I feel like we were all given the tools to learn the skills we wanted, it was just up to us to utilize the extra material given. I personally used a few of the links from the class pages and found that they were really helpful. I also used a lot of YouTube tutorials and how to videos to figure out how to do certain things. You could definitely say that Google was an important tool for this class.

All in all I really liked how this class was set up. I think we were able to learn at our own pace and I liked the fact that it was a little self taught. I would definitely recommend taking this class online and think that having to be in class for attendance each unit helps force students go in and ask for feedback. I loved the experiences I had with this class and had a lot of fun along the way! Thanks for a great semester.

Premiere Final Video

For this project I got a lot of inspiration from the trailers that are put out before EDM concerts happen. There are also these videos called After Movies that both people and the companies that put these events on make. Usually they feature music from artists that were there and video clips of previous years performances. I really liked the video set up and the way they showed both the stage and the people in the crowd. Some of the videos that really gave me inspiration were here, here and here.

To start my project I took all of my own videos and images. I went to all of these events and tried to take as much video as possible. I’m a little disappointed though, because a lot of my favorite videos were taken vertically which I couldn’t use for this project. After choosing which videos I wanted to use I inserted them into my project. At first I thought I was only going to use video clips but then I added some images with transitions in order to show off more of my friends and I because, in reality, EDM festivals are all about spending time with friends. After getting all the material I wanted to use I clipped the videos shorter to the parts that had the most stable footage. After that I used the position editing tool to make the video pan over my images. I made sure to switch up between zooming in, out and panning up and down on the images.

After I had everything where I wanted it to be I decided to add in some text. For this I just used different titles by clicking add new title. I put the titles in the second row for videos so that the text would overlay the image that I wanted it to. After I was happy with that I decided to add some effects. Because a lot of my video footage already had a lot going on in it I didn’t want to go crazy with the transitions. I decided the best idea was probably to just add some fade in white or black between certain parts. For some I didn’t use any transitions at all. Happy with how my video looked I decided I was going to add some audio. At first I wanted to interview friends again but this time around I decided to tell my personal journey through EDM festivals and why I love them so much. After using the slice tool to cut out any awkward gaps and unwanted audio I inserted my music and my project was finished.

I think out of all of the projects this one challenged me the most. I had a lot of trouble using the program on my computer. For some reason every time it played through it would skip and cut out. I ended up having to record my audio on my phone and then import it because of this. I also didn’t know how to use the program that well so there was a lot of learning and googling how to do things along the way. In the end I had a lot of fun and am happy with how my project turned out.

SIDE NOTE——SEPARATE FROM PROJECT

I know we are not allowed to use copyright material in our projects and that is why I used the audio that I did for my project. I wasn’t sure exactly how fair use is applied and read on the website that for our projects it still doesn’t apply. It was very difficult to find CC EDM and it is almost non existent. In my own time I decided to make a version of my video with actual EDM songs that I have heard at these concerts. I feel as though this music gives the feel of the festivals in a much better way and expresses my views of the concert. I am much more proud of this version than the other. I do not expect a grade for this video but am interested in feedback in general just so that I may improve my skills as a video editor. Thank you so much and I hope you enjoy.

Premiere Video Draft

For this project I got the idea to do a festival after movie. It is very common for people to make their own videos and then create a cool short movie kind of summing up what the festival was like. A lot of the major companies that put on these festivals even make their own videos a lot of the time. I also drew a lot of inspiration from the teaser and trailer videos that they release before an event. Here are a couple videos in particular that I really liked: 1, 2, 3

Some of the design principals that really influenced me were the use of color, camera angles and different effects to give the videos different feels. I feel like by using different effects as seen in the examples that I provided, different feelings and emotions are able to be expressed. I’m hoping that when I go back and edit I will also be able to effectively show the different emotions and feeling of each of the festivals that I went to.

To do this project I started out by going to all of the events that I wanted featured in my video. I took a lot of footage but because it was so crowded a lot of it was really jerky and hard to focus. I feel like this kind of helps with the feeling of being at a concert. I also made the mistake of taking a bunch of vertical footage which I later found out that I couldn’t use for this project. Because of this my whole project has bee change around. I no longer plan on doing just a recap of my year of raving but instead will do a voice over highlighting what I love most about them. For my draft I started by adding a bunch of videos that I really liked. I then cropped them down to the specific point that I liked the most. After this I added a few small transitions. I didn’t use any audio from the videos because it was too loud and poor but I plan on using my voice and other music in the background. Along with this I still need to add a title page, credits and the names of the artists that are being featured. I also plan to add more effects to make the videos each have their own feel. I know I still have a lot more work to do but I am excited to see how it comes out.

I used a song in my draft but do not plan to have it in the final, it is only there now so that my draft isn’t silent.

Audition Audio Story

For this project I ended up interviewing 4 of my friends about their experiences and opinions on EDM festivals. I thought this related back well to my topic because their responses really highlight some of the feelings you get at these concerts. I tried to set the audio up so it sounded a little more like a group of friends talking because that’s what these festivals are all about: having fun with a group of your friends.

For me, I really liked the idea of having my audio set up to sound similar to that of an interview. I wanted it to sound similar to the many podcasts you can hear of EDM artists being interviewed about their work. I thought that this would be the most logical and fitting approach for my project design.  I think some of the most significant aspects of my design were the interview questions, background music and my introduction in the beginning. I think that by introducing my friends as they spoke it allowed the viewer to see who was going to talk better and allowed for more of an interview like style. I think having the background music also really helped it feel like a podcast or a interview found on popular music sites.

To start this project I began with writing out the questions that I wanted to ask my friends. I then got my phone and used one of the recording applications I had to record my friends. I made sure to use headphones with a microphone in order to get the best sounding audio as possible. After that I recorded myself asking the questions. For my first draft I started with just putting all of the audio in together to make one fluid audio clip. To edit it I used the razor tool to cut out specific places I didn’t want. For a lot of the audio I had a lot of unwanted pauses, “ums” and “likes” that I didn’t want. I also dragged the ends of the clips in to shorten them up in the beginning and ends. For my draft that is all I could really do. However, after getting a lot of feedback from my peers I got some good ideas for editing. I was told that maybe an introduction could help my project flow a little better and I totally agreed. For my editing process I actually ended up cutting one of my friends out entirely. I did’t have enough time to fit five people’s responses in and hers tended to be really long and hard to edit shorter. After cutting out her audio I added in my own introduction after another round of recording myself on my phone.

After I finally finished recording I added in my narratives and clipped those with the razor tool to cut out the unwanted pauses I had. After this I went through and merged the clips together by right clicking and choosing “merge clips”. Once I was done editing my audio I decided that some of the volumes needed to be changed so that all of the audio was about the same level. For each persons clip I went through and moved the yellow audio line so that all of them sounded about the same. To finish up my project I moved my recordings to be centered between 2 minutes and then added background music. I lowered the yellow volume line of this so it wouldn’t compete with the voices and used the little fade boxes to make the music fade in at the beginning and out at the end. After that I was done!

Audition Story Draft

For this project I decided to create an interview like audio story. I decided to ask a bunch of my friends that like to go to EDM festivals what their first one was, why they like them and if they would recommend them to someone who has never gone before.  I think these are some really key questions that can help people understand the culture of EDM and what makes them so lovable by so many people.

I really like the idea of story telling through interviews and thought that this would be a great way t express EDM festivals. In my later draft I plan to add soft background music in order to make it seem like a podcast. Each of the elements or questions in my audio are really important in expressing my story. In the beginning I started with recording myself asking the questions. I then went to a lot of my friends and recorded them too. After this I inserted all of the recordings and started editing.

To record my  audio I used an application on my phone and then emailed the files to my computer. I then opened up audition and created a new multimedia file . I inserted all of the audio i wanted by dragging them in and dropping them into my document. I then organized them so that the responses followed which question was being asked. The main tool I used was the slicing tool in order to cut out unwanted “ands” or “ums”. I also cropped the audio so that it was shorter in the beginning and end. Later I plan to adjust the volume of some of the audio so they are all the same and add music that fades in and out. Some of the challenges I faced were figuring out how to crop the audio in just the right place so that it still ran smooth. All of the material I used was my own.

Audio Samples

For this project I plan to interview multiple people on how they got into EDM festivals and why they enjoy them so much.
